All 20 Premier League teams enter the FA Cup at the third-round stage, during a highly competitive season. With just six points separating the top five clubs, the importance of the oldest domestic cup competition in the world is under debate. Some managers have their sights set on bigger prizes, while others see it as an opportunity to rest key players. However, for some managers, winning the FA Cup could be crucial for their job security.

In this article, we analyze eight top bosses and the dilemma they face this weekend.

Guardiola

Guardiola’s main concern this season is maintaining hunger and high standards after Manchester City’s incredible treble success. The FA Cup is the first competition they are at risk of not defending, but they have been fortunate to face struggling Championship side Huddersfield Town. Rotation will be necessary given their opponents and recent exertions in the FIFA Club World Cup. Guardiola can afford to wait until later in the month before fully considering the importance of the FA Cup. Only an early exit would confirm any hints of complacency creeping in.

Klopp

Klopp understands the toll of competing on multiple fronts. Liverpool played 63 games in the 2021-22 season, narrowly missing out on a quadruple. Fatigue affected their following season, finishing fifth. Now, with Liverpool unexpectedly topping the Premier League after 20 matches, Klopp faces a difficult decision. Liverpool’s high-intensity style demands rotation, even against tough opposition like Arsenal. Exiting the competition wouldn’t be a major setback, but winning the league or conquering Europe remains Klopp’s ultimate goal.

Aston Villa

Aston Villa, under new manager Emery, find themselves in a strong position. They haven’t won the FA Cup since 1957, but Emery has led the team to second place in the Premier League. Emery must decide whether to rotate his squad to protect their title challenge and Europa League aspirations, or prioritize winning a winnable trophy. Their upcoming match against Middlesbrough, also chasing promotion, presents an interesting challenge for Emery.

Newcastle United

Newcastle’s manager, Howe, faces scrutiny due to their recent poor form. A string of losses has increased the pressure on Howe and a defeat to local rivals Sunderland would amplify it further. Newcastle’s desire for a trophy is strong, and exiting the FA Cup would make their top-four ambitions even more challenging. Howe must rest key players ahead of their match against Manchester City.

Arsenal

Arsenal has experienced success in recent FA Cup competitions, with their 2020 victory providing Arteta the platform to rebuild the team. However, their ambitions now lie in higher prizes. While Arteta has transformed Arsenal in his tenure, there is still a gap between their aspirations and current ability. Winning the FA Cup could bridge that gap and provide a stepping stone for future success. Arsenal’s match against Liverpool will test their squad depth after a demanding festive period.

Tottenham

Postecoglou has impressed at Tottenham, guiding them to the top four in the Premier League. A first trophy since 2008 would be a remarkable achievement for the team, especially after losing star striker Harry Kane. The Carabao Cup loss to Fulham, caused by fielding a weakened team, is now overshadowed by their league success.

Chelsea

Chelsea’s season has been one of transition, with significant investment and squad changes. Pochettino understands that his performance won’t solely be judged by their Premier League position. However, sitting 10th after 20 matches is not the expected outcome. Winning the FA Cup would validate Pochettino’s progress and deliver a much-awaited trophy. It would also bind the squad together and bolster their Champions League qualification hopes. Pochettino’s job is secure, but a cup run would offset any disappointment in the league.

Manchester United

Manchester United’s problems extend beyond the FA Cup. However, a win in the competition could strengthen Ten Hag’s position as manager, as the club faces a restructuring. In a season where consistency has been lacking, the FA Cup offers respite. A victory in the league and the EFL Cup last season silenced critics temporarily. On the other hand, a loss to Wigan Athletic would deepen the crisis at Old Trafford.
