The first semi-final of the Super Cup delivered entertainment in spades in front of a lively crowd in Riyadh, with the game played at a relentless pace until the two teams tired in the additional half hour.
Set-piece headers from Mario Hermoso and Antonio Rudiger were followed by a clever Ferland Mendy flicked finish and a fine solo strike from Antoine Griezmann, who became Atleti’s all-time record scorer, as the teams went in 2-2 at half-time.

A mistake from Real goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalaga led to an own goal from Rudiger that looked to have won it for Atletico in normal time, only for Dani Carvajal to score late on after a move that had seen Vinicius Junior and Jude Bellingham both brilliantly denied in the box.
And it was Real, having looked the better team for much of the night, who won it in extra-time, with a looping Stefan Savic own goal followed by a dramatic final-second fifth as Brahim Diaz outpaced Jan Oblak, who had come up for a corner, to race onto a hoofed clearance and finish from just inside the Atletico half.
Carlo Ancelotti’s side will now face either Barcelona or Osasuna in Sunday’s final at the same ground in the Saudi Arabian capital.
TALKING POINT – RIYADH CROWD RISE TO RECOGNISE MADRID’S BEST
Any fears that the Saudi Arabian home for this match would prevent a high-octane derby game were dispelled early on, with both teams going full throttle from the first whistle, naming strong XIs and playing the game with the level of the intensity that you’d expect in a league match.
And the players were quick to whip up the crowd too, with Real Madrid’s players gesturing to the fans for more noise throughout the first 15 minutes, with the Saudi crowd responding willingly.
It made for a terrific atmosphere in a match that felt like it could have been in Madrid, rather than thousands of miles away on the outskirts of Riyadh.
PLAYER OF THE MATCH – DANI CARVAJAL (REAL MADRID)
Real full-back Carvajal was outstanding, making some crucial defensive contributions when required and offering plenty of attacking threat when he got forward. His finish for the equaliser that sent the game to extra-time was brilliant, and it was his excellent cross that was flicked home by Mendy for Real Madrid’s second. So much of what Real did well came from their right-back.
